Over the past decade we have manufactured private-label programmes for more than 200 brands — from single-container startups to national hardware chains. The successful ones share patterns. So do the failures. Here is what we have learned, written for importers planning their first own-brand line.
Mistake 1 — Starting Too Wide
First-time brands often want 40 SKUs on day one. The data says: six well-chosen SKUs cover 80% of early demand — zirconia flap discs in grit 40/60/80 at Ø115mm and Ø125mm. Prove rotation first, then extend into ceramic, fiber discs and surface conditioning.
Mistake 2 — Treating Packaging As An Afterthought
In retail, the label sells the first disc; the grain sells the second. Budget real time for artwork, shelf packaging and barcode compliance. Our design team provides print-ready dielines free with any OEM order — use them early, not the week before shipment.
Mistake 3 — Chasing The Lowest Unit Price
A $0.02 saving per disc means nothing if flap density was quietly reduced. Always compare discs per pallet AND flaps per disc. Ask the factory for the flap count in writing — a serious manufacturer will give it without hesitation.
What The Winners Do
- Order a graded sample kit and burst-test it against the incumbent brand.
- Launch with a focused SKU set and real safety stock.
- Put the factory's certifications (ISO, MPA, EN 13743) on the packaging.
- Visit the factory — or at least video-audit the line — before the second order.
